Sept. 12, 2009 – The Siteman Cancer Center and Emery Entertainment have designated the week of Oct. 8 to 14 as survivor week at the Playhouse at Westport Plaza in honor of local breast cancer survivors. Siteman, along with several other St. Louis area cancer advocacy groups, is inviting breast cancer survivors to experience the new musical UNBEATABLE! for free during a weeklong celebration before the show opens to the public on Oct. 15.
UNBEATABLE! was inspired by the true story of co-creator Laurie Frey, who was working with Emery Entertainment when she was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. It follows the journey of Tracy Boyd, a young business woman whose busy life is derailed by her diagnosis and treatment. The musical juxtaposes the seriousness of a cancer diagnosis with optimism, hopefulness and a keen sense of humor.
“We at Emery Entertainment wanted to honor many of those who have been through what our lead character has been through. This show is our gift to those who have inspired us to savor life,” says Paul Emery, president of Emery Entertainment. “Unfortunately for women and men, breast cancer is becoming all too common in our lives, and finding others to relate to, empathize with and laugh with is an important part of beating it.”
"After viewing a screening of the show, we knew right away we had to invite our breast cancer survivors to experience this powerful presentation," says Susan Kraenzle, manager of Siteman's Joanne Knight Breast Health Center. "We wanted to include not only survivors treated at Siteman but also those from a wide range of groups in the region. This sends an important message that together, we are stronger in the fight."
Tickets for survivor week are available to breast cancer survivors, who will receive an additional ticket for a guest. To request tickets, visit the order form on the UNBEATABLE! Web site and enter “SCC” in the survivor code field. Tickets will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
UNBEATABLE! opens to the public for a limited engagement beginning Oct. 15, marking its nationwide debut. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday; 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday; and 2 p.m. Sunday. (Evening performances for survivor week will have a special start time of 7 p.m.) Tickets are $39.50 and are available through MetroTix at 314-534-1111 or the Playhouse at Westport Plaza box office at 314-469-7529.
