CUREiosity Celebrates Siteman’s “Rock Star Doctors”

CUREiosity has continued to be one of the most anticipated VIP events in St. Louis. And this year’s Nov. 2 event at Lumen in downtown St. Louis lived up to the hype. DJ Greasy provided the musical backdrop for a Rock Doc on stilts, glitter tattoos (pictured at right), a photo booth and a “see it to believe it” cirque performance that left party goers holding their breath.
Each year, “rock star physicians” at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center — so named for their leading-edge research—are featured at CUREiosity. This year’s Rock Docs were: Amy Cyr, MD; Dione Farria, MD, MPH; Ryan Fields, MD; Brian Van Tine, MD, PhD; and Lukas Wartman, MD. Rock Docs past and present mingled with guests – all easily identified by their graffiti-painted lab coats.
“It’s an opportunity for people to meet these Rock Docs in a social setting and learn about their work and the wonderful institution that is Siteman,” says advisory chair Barry Horn. “We started this event in 2006 as five people with a vision. I’m proud to say that this volunteer-led event had 430 attendees this year.”
Honorary chair Mike Shannon, co-chairs Ken Rosenthal and Pat Shannon-VanMatre, vice chairs Sarah Garlich and Jacob Herschend, and advisory chair Barry Horn-along with producer Amit Dhawan-led 2012 CUREiosity committee members.
“CUREiosity is designed to celebrate the physician-researchers who are at the heart of what makes Siteman a world-class cancer center,” says co-chair Ken Rosenthal.
At 27, vice chair Sarah Garlich is one of CUREiosity’s youngest leaders. “I think it’s important for people my age to participate in fundraising events, especially for an institution like Siteman that does such great work and touches the lives of so many people,” she says. “CUREiosity makes getting involved easy because it’s a fun party and has such unusual entertainment every year.”

In addition to CUREiosity, Garlich oversaw the Shopportunity pre-event, in which 14 St. Louis-area boutiques participated. “On Saturday, Sept. 29, each of the boutiques agreed to donate 15 percent of their sales to Siteman,” says Garlich, who owns the Cha boutique. “Shopportunity raised almost $6,000 from just one day’s sales. We hope to have even more retailers join us next year.”
“You meet so many wonderful people at this event, many of whom have directly benefitted from the expertise available at Siteman,” says vice chair Jacob Herschend. “It’s wonderful to know that the proceeds from CUREiosity help further the research so vital to advancing cancer care.”
The net proceeds from CUREiosity 2012 support two vital research efforts. The Director’s Discovery Fund allows Timothy J. Eberlein, MD, Siteman’s Director, to support promising new areas of research for all types of cancer. In addition, CUREiosity supports the Mike and Judy Shannon Brain Cancer Research Fund. “Dad and I are pleased to chair an event that funds brain cancer research─something very close to our hearts,” says co-chair Pat Shannon-VanMatre. “Mom would be proud of our family’s participation in this wonderful event.”
