Exceptional Expertise, Multidisciplinary Care
The gynecologic cancer team at the Siteman Cancer Center treats women with cancer of the cervix, endometrium, ovary, uterus, vagina and vulva. We recognize that each patient and each case is different, and we customize treatment with input from the patient, her family and her referring physician.

Because we are a part of one of the country’s major academic medical centers, we have access to the latest developments in cancer care. Our doctors are leaders in the research and application of new treatments and the development of novel and effective drug therapies.

Our gynecologic cancer physicians care for more patients and offer greater experience than any other group in the Midwest. Each year, we treat more than 450 new patients with invasive cancer, perform more than 600 surgeries and complete more than 10,000 outpatient visits.

Beyond our gynecologic cancer physicians, our team includes radiation oncologists, nurses, a psychologist, a social worker and genetic counselors. These specialists meet weekly to discuss patient care, providing a collective expertise not always available at other cancer centers.

Treating a Range of Gynecologic Cancers
Patients may be referred to our team after being diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer or precancerous condition. These include women with:

  • Pelvic cancers such as cervical, endometrial, ovarian or vulvar cancer
  • Abnormal Pap smears or cervical lesions requiring further examination
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Vulvar irritations or lesions
  • Pelvic masses

We also are experienced in treating cancers that have recurred, or returned. In addition to standard options, our physicians are uniquely capable of providing treatments available only through clinical trials at the Siteman Cancer Center.

A Leader in Clinical Trials
As a member of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), a national clinical trials group, Siteman participates in more clinical trials than any other gynecologic oncology group in the Midwest. Since 1987, our physicians have enrolled more than 600 patients in GOG trials. Patients also can take part in studies with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, a group dedicated to radiation therapy trials, and receive new cancer therapies offered through clinical studies initiated by Siteman researchers and physicians.

Specialized Nurses and Hospital Facilities
Our nurse coordinators and advanced-practice nurse care exclusively for patients with gynecologic cancers. They are intimately involved in educating patients, coordinating appointments, scheduling tests and acting as a liaison between patients and physicians.

Patients who require hospitalization are cared for on a special floor dedicated to women with gynecologic cancers. Support programs are conveniently offered on the floor and elsewhere on the medical center campus.

Genetic Counseling Services
Women with a family history of ovarian cancer may be at increased risk for developing cancer. Our genetic counselor provides an individualized assessment of cancer risk and up-to-date information regarding cancer genetics. The counseling process is based on a detailed evaluation of family and personal health history.
