Earlier this month marked a homecoming of sorts for Chera Dunn. Away for 19 years, she returned Jan. 12 to her professional roots in mammography at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

As the newly appointed manager of the Joanne Knight Breast Health Center, Dunn will oversee three locations and a mobile van that provide more than 28,000 mammograms per year.

“I am very excited about my new position, and I’m glad to be ‘home,’ ” said Dunn, who left Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology in 1996 because of her husband’s military assignment. “Best of all is that I can continue to help women maintain good breast health.”

In 1987, Dunn received her certificate in radiologic technology from Washington University. She remained on campus as a technologist and clinical and classroom instructor until she and her husband moved. For more than a decade afterward, Dunn worked as a mammography supervisor and technologist in North Carolina, Virginia and Illinois.

In 2006, she switched paths and joined Biomedical Systems in St. Louis. As a senior project manager there, Dunn provided clinical trial support for pharmaceutical and medical device companies. Through that job she met radiologists Catherine Appleton, MD, and Susan Holley, MD, PhD, at Washington University and Siteman. Appleton is chief of the Breast Imaging Section.

“They both are amazingly brilliant women and physicians,” Dunn said. “Excellence is the word I think of when I think of Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. I am so proud to be a part of it all.”

Appleton said Dunn is a welcome addition.

“Her deep commitment to women’s health and her long history with our institutions and the St. Louis region make her a perfect fit,” Appleton said.
