Joanne Knight Breast Health Center

Services Offered

Breast Health CenterEach year, more than 50,000 women visit the Joanne Knight Breast Health Center in the Center for Advanced Medicine for screening mammograms, diagnostic workups, breast cancer treatment and follow-up visits. Most of these women come for routine mammography screening and are found to be healthy, with no further testing required.

If a woman has an abnormal mammogram or other breast problem, a team of Washington University physicians affiliated with the world-renowned Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology is available to conduct a complete evaluation. After consultation or other tests, these  physicians discuss their findings so that the best course of action can be determined. Since all of this happens at the Breast Health Center, patient care is simplified and expedited.

The Breast Health Center offers a comprehensive range of services using the most advanced equipment and methods. Mammography, breast ultrasound and needle biopsies are performed on site at the center, and breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is available nearby on our campus, if needed. All mammography is completed using digital equipment, which produces electronic images that are stored on computers instead of on film. A national study completed in 2005 showed that digital mammography is more effective for women under the age of 50, women who are premenopausal or perimenopausal and those with dense breasts. Washington University radiologists at Siteman enrolled more women in the study than any other participating institution.

Breast radiologists and breast surgeons are available for consultation for women who have abnormal mammograms, breast cancer or worrisome signs or symptoms. In addition, our staff of nurses and radiologic technologists is here to help and offer support.

The Breast Health Center also provides risk assessment, second opinions and referrals for genetic counseling. If necessary, financial counseling and, in some cases, financial support are arranged for those without resources. No woman should go without a mammogram because of financial concerns. Women who are worried about their ability to pay for a mammogram or breast cancer treatment are encouraged to call the Breast Health Center at 314-454-8466 for information and assistance.

Breast Cancer Center

Finding a lump in the breast or having an abnormal mammogram can be frightening. The important thing to remember is that most of the time these lumps are not cancerous. The staff at the Breast Health Center acts quickly to make sure women receive their diagnosis and treatment plan in a personal and professional setting. Those who are found to have breast cancer have access to Washington University doctors at Siteman for treatment. The Breast Health Center strives to coordinate a patient's schedule so that radiologists, oncologists and surgeons can be seen in a timely fashion. These are specialists who are recognized experts in their fields.

Education and Support

Siteman Cancer Center's Barnard Health and Cancer Information Center in the lobby of the Center for Advanced Medicine provides educational materials and support programs on cancer-related topics, including breast cancer. Nurses and educators who staff the information center can direct patients to literature, videotapes and Web sites that are helpful and relevant to their conditions.

In addition, weekly and monthly support groups are available to help Breast Health Center patients through each stage of their diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Our groups cover many different issues, from general concerns about cancer to more specific issues. For instance, one offers cosmetic tips from a beauty expert for those currently undergoing therapy. We also offer several groups for young women with breast cancer and a program for children and grandchildren of breast cancer patients.
