Hospital Visiting Policies

General visiting hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. except in special areas, such as intensive-care units.

To ensure patient safety:

  • No more than two visitors are permitted at one time in semi-private rooms.
  • No more than four visitors are permitted at one time in private rooms.
  • Staff members may ask visitors to leave the room if treatment of the patient is required.
  • Children under 12 are not allowed on patient floors and must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • In semiprivate rooms, visitors are asked to respect roommates’ right to quiet and privacy.
  • Visitors are required to wear appropriate attire, which includes shirts and shoes.
  • Visitors cannot stay overnight in a semiprivate room.

Some units offer flexibility regarding these policies. Patients and visitors should check with charge nurses on individual units if they have questions or concerns.

Persons other than patients, employees and staff who wish to enter or remain within Barnes-Jewish Hospital between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. will need to obtain authorization to do so from appropriate representatives of the hospital, and are required to wear identification to indicate that they are legitimate visitors in the facility.

Meal trays may be ordered for visitors for a small fee. Guest trays cost $9. To order a guest tray, speak to a nurse or food service associate.
