New Report Outlines Risk of Tanning Beds

June 2, 2010 – According to a new report in the journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, the use of tanning beds significantly increases the likelihood of an individual developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. In this episode of Cancer Connection, Siteman Cancer Center dermatologist Lynn Cornelius, MD, says tanning beds can increase the risk of melanoma by 75 percent, and that risk goes up with frequency of use. Cornelius says the American Academy of Dermatology would like to require more informed consent for those who use tanning beds and restrict use to those over the age of 16.
