Postdoctoral Fellowship in Psycho-Oncology
The Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis offers a one-year postdoctoral fellowship for an individual with doctoral-level training in behavioral medicine or health psychology. The fellowship begins in September.
Job Setting
Siteman is a leader in patient care, cancer research, prevention, education and community outreach and a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. It offers the extensive expertise of more than 350 Washington University research scientists and physicians, many of whom provide care for more than 8,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients each year.
Program Description
The Siteman Counseling Service provides clinical services – including outpatient assessment and treatment, inpatient consultation and a variety of support services – for individuals with cancer and their family members. The postdoctoral fellow functions as a full member of the service, assuming the same range of responsibilities as supervisors, at the appropriate level of autonomy given the fellow’s abilities and experience.
The goals of the fellowship program are to provide advanced training in the provision of services to patients and their family members in a medical setting and to prepare for a position in the field of psycho-oncology or medical psychology. Weekly peer and individual supervision is included in the training experience, and the fellowship meets the requirements for licensure regarding postdoctoral supervised experience in the state of Missouri. In addition, the fellow will have access to a wide variety of didactic training experiences available at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.
Responsibilities
- Provision of clinical services (brief assessment, psychoeducation and individual or group psychotherapy) for patients and families receiving care at the Siteman Cancer Center. Common treatment issues include management of physical symptoms or treatment side effects (e.g. pain, nausea, fatigue), adjustment disorders, depression, anxiety, caregiving concerns and end-of-life issues.
- Documentation of clinical contact with patients.
- Consultation to providers of medical and psychosocial services for patients, including oncologists, psychiatrists, social workers, spiritual care providers, nursing staff and nutritionists.
- Participation in educational and outreach programs within or sponsored by the Siteman Cancer Center. Although not a requirement of the position, fellows also may participate in research activities if opportunities are available.
Salary and Benefits
The postdoctoral fellow will be offered a competitive salary and benefits package, including health insurance, vacation time and sick leave.
Position Requirements
A doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in psychology and interest and experience in working with a medical population.
