3-D Mammography System Approved by FDA

Feb. 14, 2011 – On Feb. 11, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first X-ray system to provide 3-D images of the breast for mammography. According to Dione Farria, MD, MPH, a breast radiologist at the Siteman Cancer Center, the new technology holds promise for reducing the number of women called back for additional breast cancer testing, a rate that currently stands at about 10 percent. Farria has been studying the new technology, called tomosynthesis, since 2009. Currently, it is available only to women participating in clinical trials. But as study results become more clear, other advantages may emerge, and the technology may be recommended for a larger number of patients.
