Cancer Center Events Raise More Than $200,000

Feb. 5, 2004 – It was a record-breaking year for two events benefiting the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center. The "Reach for the Stars" Cancer Gala and the Charles Matthew Espiritu (CME) Foundation Golf Outing brought in a total of more than $200,000.

The fifth annual "Reach for the Stars" Cancer Gala was the most successful ever. The sellout event raised more than $170,000. "Swinging on a Star," the theme of the event, was held at the Starlight Roof at The Chase Park Plaza last fall. Dozens of guests, including key civic and philanthropic leaders, enjoyed an evening that included an oral auction featuring such items as a cruise to the Celtic Isles donated by INTRAV and Clipper Cruise Line. Last year's major event sponsors included GlaxoSmithKline, Energizer, Roche Laboratories, Cardinal Health, Kirberg Roofing Inc. and Pfizer Global Pharmaceuticals.

To date, the "Reach for the Stars" Cancer Gala has raised more than half a million dollars in support of cancer care and research, with the past four years' net proceeds benefiting the Siteman Cancer Center.

During its fourth annual golf outing held last fall at the Far Oaks Golf Club in Fairview Heights, Ill., the CME Foundation raised $40,000 in net proceeds to assist Siteman cancer patients and their families with lodging needs. The CME Foundation was formed in 1997 to honor the memory of Charles Matthew Espiritu and to realize his dream of helping patients who must travel away from home for cancer treatment. Major sponsors of the golf outing were the W.R. Persons Charitable Trust and Thompson Coburn LLP.

Mark your calendars for the next "Reach for the Stars" Cancer Gala, scheduled for Nov. 13 at the Coronado Ballroom in Grand Center. For more information about the event, call the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation office at 314.286.0600.
