Coping with cancer is hard enough – patients shouldn’t have to worry about finding their way around a large, unfamiliar medical center as well. The Siteman Cancer Center Navigator Program provides volunteers who meet new patients at the beginning of their first appointment at Siteman's main campus and accompany them to physician offices and testing locations.
How the Program Works
Patients who have requested the services of a navigator are met in the lobby of the Center for Advanced Medicine before their first appointment. The navigator will already have a copy of appointments scheduled for the patient that day. After a brief tour, the navigator will escort the patient to the first appointment. Navigators will stay with patients throughout the the day, if necessary. Between office visits, the navigator can take patients and families to the Barnard Health and Cancer Information Center, the gift shop or even the cafeteria to get coffee or lunch.
How to Request a Navigator
When patients or family members call the Siteman Cancer Center to schedule an appointment, a referral specialist will ask if they would like the assistance of a navigator for their first visit. Those who schedule appointments through a physician's office should let the person making the appointment know they would like the help of a navigator.
